PROCESSION
OF ALTARS
12 NIGHTS NATURE 🙴 CULTURE $ TBA
"For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.· "
- Kahlil Gibran
The preparations for Muertos begin with the seed of the farmers who grow harvests of Marigolds, Cockscomb`s, Baby`s Breath, Chrysantheum`s and more. Cleaning rituals in the cemetery conclude with grand processions and gestures of love.
The bustling streets are full of colour, with lively sounds of mariachis that accompany the altars, as the families dance them from their homes, into the cemetery. A photograph, an arrangement of favourite flowers, a song of reminicense, and the offering of favourite foods are just some of what is here to witness during this enchanting and uplifiting ritual.

Trip Itinerary
Dia de Muertos
November 1, 2023
Departure Location: Morelia
Depart Morelia by 9:30 AM for Tzintzuntzan, making a short stop at the Cucuchucho cemetery, where the locals will be cleaning and preparing for the most important celebration of the year. Arrive at Las Yacatas Restaurant for our 12:00 lunch reservation. (Please be at the restaurant by 11:50, as they have an incredible busy day and have granted us a special reservation).
Following lunch, head to the street and cemetery, to witness this heart-touching procession of altars.
At 2:30, head back to the van for your 2:45 departure for Capula, to enjoy their Catrina Festival. The van will depart Capula at 4:30 to return guests to Morelia.
Please Note: If you wish to have your face painted today, please wait until after you visit the cemetery in Tzintzuntzan. We are working hard to discourage guests from visiting the cemeteries in costume, as this is not part of the Púrepecha tradition. That said, as you are heading to the Catrina Festival in Capula, and will not be in any other cemeteries today, guests are welcome to have their faces painted in Tzintzuntzan before heading to Capula.

Tour Considerations
Photographs
Taking Photographs in cemeteries and during celebrations is permitted, but please do not take close-up photographs of the locals without permission. Please refrain from using your flash.
La Catrina Costumes
We do not allow our guests to wear face-paint into the cemeteries, as this is not in adherence with traditional indigenous practices. If you would like to have your face painted after visiting the cemetery in Tzintzuntzan, that is appropriate for the Catrina Festival in Capula, and happenings in the streets.
It's Rainy Season
Please be prepared for rain. Sturdy footware/boots are recommended as the cemeteries can get extremely slippery when muddy. We recommend rain gear, umbrella, and warm layers.
Children will Trick or Treat
Some indigenous children are now permitted by their parents to dress up like Catrina during Muertos, but this is still not practiced by teenagers, adults or elders. As the parents permit their children to trick-or-treat, guests are welcome to bring candies or pesos for the kids.
Bathrooms Cost Money
Bathrooms cost around 5 pesos to use, and though they are available, they are not in all locations. Please ask your guides for assistance.
