INTO THE LANDS

OF THE RARAMURI

12 NIGHTS                         NATURE 🙴 CULTURE                         $ TBA

"The restlessness and the longing, like the longing that is in the whistle of a faraway train. Except that the longing isn't really in the whistle—it is in you."

- Meindart DeJong

The romance of train travel crowned with spectacular vistas overlooking magnificent pinnacles, ridges and a powerful network of six colossal canyons, with depths that are greater than those of the Grand Canyon — it  is a soul-lifting experience...

But the real adventure begins once you step off the train platform for a pilgrimage that delivers you to straight into the mysterious lands of the Raramuri.  Hide-covered pottery, vibrant fabrics, mystical waterfalls, the taste of Sotol on your tongue, pine-needles woven into exquisite baskets, and the warm smiles of locals who welcome you as guests of their territories,  communities and cultural observances.

SAFETY CONCERNS

Newcomers often ask: Is Mexico Safe?

While crime is widely reported across the news, it is largely targeted in Mexico.  The general rules that apply elsewhere, apply here, such as not flashing your wealth around, not walking alone at night, or using ATM's after dark when the streets are vacant of people.  Don't sell or buy drugs, and be aware of your surroundings.  If you are driving in Mexico, we don't recommend travel on rural roads after dark, as accidents with livestock are too common.

Generally, Mexico is a very safe country with a warm and engaging citizenry, lovely restaurants, fascinating history, eclectic architecture and never–ending celebrations.

Tour Considerations

Altitude

The canyons reach an altitude of around 7800 Feet above sea level.  We will do some light hiking in the area, but nothing overly strenuous.

Twisting Roads on the Cliff

The descent to Batopilas and Urique are long and steep, with twisting switch-backs.  If you suffer from car sickness, we suggest gravol.  If you squeal on cliff-side roads, you may want to skip this, or put your head under a blanket for the descent (the climb isn´t as bad).  All joking aside - this isn´t for everyone, but we assure you these roads are well travelled here.

Meals

Vegans may find it difficult to find meals here.  Though vegetarianism is growing across Mexico, this region is remote and traditional. If you are vegetarian or vegan, please contact us for more information.

Tour Difficulty

This tour is not difficult.  Our hikes are pretty mild, and even at a higher altitude, we are not above the universal ¨danger zone¨of 8000 feet.  We will climb close though - so if you have headaches or dizziness, trouble sleeping or disorientation, you need to inform us ASAP.

Photographs

The Raramuri are used to tourists with cameras, but we still request that guests ask for permission if unsure, and especially if taking close-up photos of people.
