"If there ever comes a day when we can’t be together, keep me in your heart,

I’ll stay there forever."

- A.A. Milne

Step away from the maddening crowds and into a mezmerizing experience on Lake Patzcuaro.  From the dense darkness of early morning, lit by thousands of burning candles, to the break of dawn, when the mists rise from the lake, with the living - the cusp of night and day is sacred.

Depart Morelia by 4 AM for an early morning experience in the cemeteries of Cucuchucho and the Island of Pacanda.  As the tourists return to the city in their massive tour buses, you will be arriving for the quietest time of morning, when it is still dark to witness the cemeteries bright with candlelight, and arriving to the island for sunrise will fill your hearts with special moments you will never forget..

Trip Itinerary

Noche de Muertos

November 2, 2023

Departure Location:  Morelia

Depart Morelia by 4:00 AM for Noche de Muertos, stopping first at the Cucuchucho cemetery when it is still dark.  The crowds will be thinning, as this is the time of morning when the large tour buses start leaving, making this an ideal time of day to experience this.

From Cucuchucho, head to the boat docks of Ucaztanastacua, and head to Isla de Pacanda for sunrise in the cemetery.  This will be a really beautiful time of day to witness this observation, as the dim light of day will offer contrasting visibility.  The elders will be waking, and families will still be gathered, as this observation continues throughout the day.

Returning from Pacanda, your final stop will be in Tzintzuntzan, before heading back to Morelia.  This tour should return to the city around 11 AM.

Why Sunrise?  The numbers of tourists coming for Dia de Muertos in recent years has spiked to the point of very long traffic waits, long lines for boat rides, and an overwhelming number of foreigners in the cemeteries.  We decided to take pressure away from the peak time for the large tour companies, and offer our guests something more intimate and special, at a time of day when there are fewer crowds, and most of what you can observe is authentic.

Tour Considerations

Photographs

Taking Photographs in cemeteries and during celebrations is permitted, but please do not take close-up photographs of the locals without permission.  Please refrain from using your flash.

La Catrina Costumes

We do not allow our guests to wear face-paint into the cemeteries, as this is not in adherence with traditional indigenous practices.  If you would like to have your face painted after visiting the cemetery in Tzintzuntzan, that is appropriate for the Catrina Festival in Capula, and happenings in the streets.

It's Rainy Season

Please be prepared for rain.  Sturdy footware/boots are recommended as the cemeteries can get extremely slippery when muddy.  We recommend rain gear, umbrella, and warm layers.

Children will Trick or Treat

Some indigenous children are now permitted by their parents to dress up like Catrina during Muertos, but this is still not practiced by teenagers, adults or elders.  As the parents permit their children to trick-or-treat, guests are welcome to bring candies or pesos for the kids.

Bathrooms Cost Money

Bathrooms cost around 5 pesos to use, and though they are available, they are not in all locations.  Please ask your guides for assistance.
